Downtown Beautification

Newburyport is known far and wide for the beauty and elegance of its downtown. Each spring, Destination Newburyport installs over 175 hanging flower baskets throughout the downtown area. The program also pays for the maintenance of these flowers throughout the summer season.

In the fall, Market Square is festively decorated with cornstalks and haybales and pumpkins.

Prior to the Christmas Holiday Season, each lamppost in the downtown is decorated with greens and bows and the Market Square Christmas tree is adorned with over 10,000 lights - all provided from the proceeds from  Destination Newburyport.

Working with the Mayor’s Office, the city electrician and the DPW, we were able to make significant progress on downtown lighting. In the late spring, we hired a tree company to replace bulbs and wires in Market Square and light the those trees. After a lengthy process of custom ordering wires, bulbs and having them altered to accommodate the power situation on Inn Street, lower and mid-Inn Street were also lit.

This lighting project alone represents months of work and thousands of dollars. We are currently looking to light the top of Inn Street and then move on to Tracy Place. We are also planning to contract this tree service company to replace bulbs on a semi-annual basis allowing the trees to stay lit year-round.
